10 Methods to Speed Up Windows 8

1. Disable the Programs and Apps that Run in Startup

If your PC takes a long time to startup, it can be due to the apps that run at startup.

To find these programs, you can check out the taskbar. If any app runs at startup, you will see the logo of that app there.

To stop the startup programs from running automatically on startup, follow these steps:

  • Type show hidden icons in the Window search bar.
  • Choose the Show or hide inactive icons on the taskbar option.
  • Checkmark the Always show all icons and notifications on the taskbar option.

To find which programs run at startup, follow the steps below:

  • Right-click on Taskbar.
  • A menu will appear. Choose Task Manager from the menu.
  • A window will pop up.
  • Click on the More details button, which is in the lower-left corner of the window.
  • Go to the Startup tab. Here, you can see a list of the programs that run at startup.
  • Now, right-click on a program you want to stop from running at startup.
  • Choose Disable from the list.

Doing these steps does not stop the programs from running. It only stops it from running at startup. So, you can run that program whenever you want by double-clicking on it.

There is another way to disable startup programs. To do so, you can remove or add specific program options.

If you have some problems such as being unable to stop the program from running at startup, or the program does not have any option to change, you need to ask for a solution from the program producer.

To change a program, follow these steps:

  • Put the mouse cursor to the upper-right corner, then move your mouse cursor down.
  • Click on Search.
  • Type Appwiz.cpl in the Windows search box.
  • Choose a program, then click on Uninstall, Repair, Change.

2. Delete any additional antivirus programs

Having more than one antivirus or antispyware can slow down your device and even make it restart suddenly. To solve this problem, you need to choose one internet security program. So, make sure to uninstall additional antiviruses.

Before uninstalling other security programs, make sure that internet security running on your Windows 8.

Sometimes you may need to install a cleanup utility on your device. Because some security programs do not uninstall completely from your system.

To delete an antispyware or antivirus program, follow these steps below:

  • Put the mouse cursor to the upper-right corner, then move your mouse cursor down.
  • Click on Search.
  • Type appwiz.cpl in the Windows Search box.
  • Click on Appwiz.cpl.
  • Now, you will see a list of installed programs.
  • Here, uninstall the Internet security programs that you do not need.
  • Restart your PC.

3. Clean Up Hard Disk Errors

By the time, your PC makes some errors on the hard drive. these errors cause the system to slow down. There is a program that recognizes and cleans these errors. This program is called Check Disk.

To run Check Disk, follow these steps:

  • Put the mouse cursor to the upper-right corner, then move your mouse cursor down.
  • Click on Search.
  • Type computer in the Windows Search bar.
  • Choose This PC.
  • Right-click on a drive that you want to repair.
  • Then, click on Properties.
  • Select the Tools tab.
  • Click on the Check option under the Error checking. The time that this process takes depends on the size of your hard disk. (Do not use your PC during this process)
  • Restart your PC when the error checking is completed.

4. Clean Up your Hard Disk

To speed up your Windows 8, you need to clean up your hard disk. This action will delete unnecessary and unwanted files from your device.

To clean up your hard disk, follow the steps below:

  • Put the mouse cursor to the upper-right corner, then move your mouse cursor down.
  • Click on Search.
  • Type free up disk space in the Windows search bar.
  • Click on Free up disk space by deleting unnecessary files.
  • Now, you will see the list of your drives. Choose a drive that you want to clean up.
  • Hit the OK button.
  • Then, a message box will pop up. Choose the Delete files option.

To clean up the files related to your account, work as follow:

  • Now, you will see the list of your drives. Choose a drive that you want to clean up.
  • Hit the OK button.
  • Then, a message box will pop up. Choose the Cleanup system files option.
  • When you want to clean up system files from your PC, you will see the More Options tab. This tap consists of two extra options to free up your space.

These two options are as below:

1. System Restore and Shadow Copies:

System Restore is used for returning the system files to an earlier point in time. If your PC works normally, delete earlier restore points to save space.

2. Programs and Features:

When you delete unwanted programs, this option opens the programs and features in Control Panel. To find how much space each program uses, check the size column in programs and features.

5. Defragment your Hard Disk

If you want a faster PC, you need to optimize your hard disk. To do that, you need to defragment your hard drive. This feature helps you to optimize various types of drives. This feature automatically runs weekly, but you can set it on the manual option.

To run Optimize Drives manually, follow the steps below:

  • Put the mouse cursor to the upper-right corner, then move your mouse cursor down.
  • Click on Search.
  • Type computer in the Window search bar.
  • Choose This PC.
  • Right-click on a drive that you desire to repair.
  • Now, choose Properties.
  • Go to the Tools tab.
  • Under the Optimize and defragment drive option, click on Optimize.
  • Under the Status section, you can choose the drive that you desire to optimize.
  • To specify if your drive needs to optimize, click on Analyze.
  • When analyzing is finished, you can check out the Current status column to find out whether your drive needs optimization or not. (If it is more than 10% defragmented, you need to optimize your drive)
  • Click on the Optimize option.

If you want to change the optimization schedule, follow the steps below:

  • Put the mouse cursor to the upper-right corner, then move your mouse cursor down.
  • Click on Search.
  • Type computer in the Window search bar.
  • Choose This PC.
  • Right-click on a drive that you desire to repair.
  • Now, choose Properties.
  • Go to the Tools tab.
  • Under the Optimize and defragment drive option, click on Optimize.
  • Click on Change settings.
  • Choose one of the following options:
    • Remove the checkmark of the Run on a schedule to turn off scheduled optimization.
    • If you want to change the frequency of scheduled optimization, you need to expand the menu of the Frequency option.

Choose one of these options: Daily, Weekly, or Monthly. (The default option for optimization is weekly)

  • If you want to include or exclude any specific drive in scheduled optimization, you need to click on the Choose option which is beside the Drive. Remove the checkmark beside the drive. then hit the OK button.

Also, if you do not want to add new drives to scheduled optimization, you can remove the checkmark of the Automatically optimize new drives option.

  • Now, click on the OK button.

6. Turn Off Visual Effects

If you want to speed up your system, you can turn off some specific visual effects, or you can allow Windows to choose for you.

If you want to turn off the visual effects, do these steps:

  • Put the mouse cursor to the upper-right corner, then move your mouse cursor down.
  • Click on Search.
  • Type Performance Information and Tools in the Windows search bar.
  • Then, choose the Adjust the appearance and performance of Windows option.
  • Select the Adjust for best performance option from under the Visual Effects section.
  • Hit the OK button.

7. Use ReadyBoost

To speed up your Windows 8, you can use ReadyBoost which uses storage space on USB flash drives and flash memory cards. If you use a storage device that works with ReadyBoost, when you connect it to your PC, you will see an option to use ReadyBoost. By choosing this option, you can choose the amount of memory to use.

8. Run Less Programs at the Same Time

Sometimes to boost your PC speed, you need to change the way you work with your PC. Running five or more programs and closing multiple browsers at the same time while the email messages are also open, can affect your device significantly.

So, always note to close additional programs and do not reply to your emails while you are working with other programs.

9. Adjust Indexing Option

10. Adjust Power Plan
