How to Speed Up Internet Connection in Windows 11: Tips and Tricks

Slow speed of the Internet is one of the common issues among Internet users, and it is annoying for all users. The reason behind a slow network is not always an Internet connection. Many users of Windows 11, despite having an updated Windows, cannot enjoy the speed of the Internet. Therefore, we need to know how to speed up Internet connection in Windows 11. Many methods are presented below to increase the speed of Internet connection. Let’s see what these methods are and how to use them.

Disable Auto-Tuning Feature with Command Prompt

  1. Right click on the Start Menu.
  2. Click on Run to open Run Command.
  3. Type cmd in the search field of Run Command.
  4. Hold Ctrl + Shift + Enter to open Command Prompt.
  5. Type the command below:

netsh int tcp set global autotuninglevel=disabled

6. Press Enter to disable the Auto-Tuning feature on your system and the speed of Internet will increase.

Change the Address of DNS Server

  1. Hold Windows + R to open Run Command.
  2. Type ncpa.cpl in the search bar of Run Command.
  3. Press Enter to open the Network Connections.
  4. Right-click on an active Internet connection.
  5. Click on Properties.
  6. Go to the field of This Connection Uses the Following Items in the Properties, under the Networking tab.
  7. Click on Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4).
  8. Select the Properties button.
  9. Next to Use the Following DNS Server Addresses option, click on the radio button.
  10. Type the addresses below in the Preferred and Alternative DNS server fields.

Preferred DNS server: 8. 8. 8. 8

Alternative DNS server: 8. 8. 4. 4

11. Hit OK to save changes and exit.

Regulate the Internet Bandwidth Settings

  1. Hold Windows + I to open Settings.
  2. Select System on the left side of the pane.
  3. Click on Windows Update at the top right side.
  4. Select Advanced Options on the right side of the pane.
  5. Scroll down and select Delivery Optimization under the Additional Options.
  6. Enter the Download Settings section.
  7. By selecting the radio program next to the Percentage of Measured Bandwidth, you can adjust the percentage bandwidth.
  8. Put the check mark next to the both boxes of Limit how much bandwidth is used for downloading updates in the background and Limit how much bandwidth is used for downloading updates in the foreground.
  9. Move the slider to regulate the limit of percentage to minimum.
  10. You can also regulate the upload limit by selecting the Upload Settings section.
  11. Put the check mark next to the both boxes of Limit how much bandwidth is used for downloading updates in the background and Limit how much bandwidth is used for downloading updates in the foreground.
  12. Move the slider to regulate the limit of percentage to minimum.

Update Wi-Fi Drivers

  1. Enter the Start Menu and right-click on it.
  2. Click on Device Manager.
  3. Look for Network Adapters and click on it to expand the section.
  4. Right-click on your network drivers or Wi-Fi driver.
  5. Click on Update Driver.
  6. Select the Search Automatically for Driver Option.
  7. Windows will find the latest update and it will update automatically.
  8. Close the Device manager and restart your system.

Disable Allow Downloads By Other PCs

  1. Right-click on the Start Menu.
  2. Click on Settings and open it.
  3. Go to the left side of pane and select System.
  4. Select Windows Update link at the top right of the window.
  5. In the opened window, select Advanced Options on the right side.
  6. Scroll down and select Delivery Optimization under the Additional Options.
  7. Turn off the Allow Downloads from Other PCs in the Delivery Optimization screen.
  8. Exit the Settings, and check your Internet speed.

Change Permissions of Background App

  1. Hold Windows + I to open Settings.
  2. Click on Apps on the left.
  3. Go to the right side of the pane and select Apps & Features.
  4. Scroll down in the Apps and Features screen under the Apps list, enter app/apps one by one and select the three dots next to it.
  5. Select Advanced Options.
  6. In the opened window, scroll down and enter Background Apps Permissions.
  7. Click on the drop down menu under Let This App Run in Background part and choose Never.

Note: Do the same procedure for all applications that you do not want to run in the background.

  • Exit the Settings and restart your system to check your internet connection again.

Disable Windows Update Service

  1. Go to the Start Menu, and right click on it.
  2. Choose Run from the Menu.
  3. Type services.msc in the search bar of Run Command.
  4. Press Enter to open the Service Manager.
  5. Find Windows Update Service, in the right side, under the Names column.
  6. Double click on it to open Properties.
  7. Enter Startup Type section in the Windows Update Properties, under the General tab.
  8. From the drop-down menu, click on Disabled.
  9. Press Apply.
  10. Select OK to save changes and exit.

Remove OneNote with Powershell

  1. Hold Windows + R to open Run Command.
  2. In the search bar, type Powershell or hold Ctrl + Shift + Enter to open Windows Powershell.
  3. Type the command below in the Powershell window:

Get-AppxPackage *OneNote* | Remove-AppxPackage

  • Press Enter to uninstall it.

Disable Large Send Offload

  1. Hold Windows + R to open Run command.
  2. Type devmgmt.msc in the search bar.
  3. Hit OK to open Device Manager.
  4. Click on Network Adapters to expand the section.
  5. Right-click on Wi-Fi Adapter.
  6. Select Properties.
  7. In the Wi-Fi Properties, click on Advanced tab.
  8. Go to the field of Property and click on Large Sand Offload v2 (IPv4) from the list.
  9. Enter the Value section and put it as Disabled.
  10. Hit OK to save changes and exit.

Close Background Programs with More Data Consumption

  1. Right click on the Start Menu.
  2. Click on Task Manager.
  3. Under the tab of Processes, go to the Background Processes.
  4. Right-click on the apps and choose End Task.

Or to stop the running background applications, you can also do the following procedure:

  1. Go to Start.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Look for Apps.
  4. Select Apps and Features.
  5. Search for the application that you do not want to run in the background.
  6. Click on the three-dot menu next to the application.
  7. Choose Advanced Options.
  8. Under the Background apps permissions part, choose Never from the dropdown menu.

Turn Off Metered Connections

  1. Right-click on the Start Menu.
  2. Click on Settings from the context menu.
  3. Select Network & Internet option on the left in the Settings app.
  4. Select Wi-Fi from the right-side of the pane.
  5. Select Wi-Fi Properties in the next screen.
  6. Scroll down a little and turn off Metered connection.

Disable Windows Defender Firewall

  1. Hold Windows + R to open Run command.
  2. Type firewall.cpl in the Run command search bar.
  3. Press Enter to open the Windows Defender Firewall in the Control Panel.
  4. You will enter the Customize Settings.
  5. Enter the Private Network Settings.
  6. Click on Turn off Windows Defender Firewall.

Note: Do the same procedure above for the Public Network Settings.

  • Hit OK to save changes and exit.
  • Now the Windows Defender Firewall is disabled.

Note: after finishing the procedure, ensure that the Windows Defender Firewall is turned off and back to the position of protecting your PC.

Disconnect and Reconnect from Network

Another ways to fix a slow connection is reconnecting the network connection. To do so, follow the steps below: 

  1. At the lower-right corner of the taskbar, select the Wi-Fi icon.
  2. Select the arrow button next to the Wi-Fi button to enter Manage Wi-Fi Connections.
  3. Find the network your device is connected and select Disconnect.
  4. After that, select Connect to reconnect to the network.

Note: You may need to input the Wi-Fi password to secure the connection.

  • If you need to reenable it, right click on the Wi-Fi icon on the task bar and then choose Network and Internet Settings.
  • If you want to turn off Wi-Fi and reenable it, right click on the icon of Wi-Fi on the task bar and click on Network and Internet Settings.
  • In this section, switch turn off to turn on after a new seconds.
  • After turning off the Wi-Fi, you should reconnect to your network.

Run the Troubleshooter of the Internet Connections

Windows 11 has troubleshooters which can fix issues on your PC. Follow the steps below to run the Internet Connections troubleshooter:

  1. Go to Start Menu.
  2. Enter Settings.
  3. Click on System on the left side.
  4. Select Troubleshooter on the right side.
  5. Select Other Troubleshooters under the Options part.
  6. Click on the Run next to Internet Connections.
  7. Follow the on-screen instructions to work your way by troubleshooter.

Activate Wireless Access Control

Sometimes connections of too many devices to the router may be the reason for the slow Internet connection. So, you can add wireless access to limit the devices connected to the router.

Note: Routers do not have the same settings. Therefore, the process varies from manufacturer to manufacturer. The following steps are for the PROLINK ADSL router.

Follow the steps below to use this method:

  1. Select the Search icon and type the command below and click to Open:

ipconfig / all

  • Hit Enter.
  • Look for the default gateway address displayed as highlighted. It is usually given on the back of the router or router manual.
  • Open the default portal address on web browser.
  • Log in with credentials.
  • Select Wi-Fi from the right part under the tab preparation.
  • Select Access Control List.
  • Select the Allow Listed option from the Wireless Access Control Mode.
  • Add the MAC address of the devices that are allowed to use this internet connection.
  • Select Add.
  • Select Apply Changes and exit.

Update Your Windows to the Latest Update

Windows updates can effect on the speed of the internet connection. Follow the steps below to download the latest Windows 11 update.

  1. Hold Windows + I to open Settings.
  2. Select Windows Update from the left pane.
  3. Select Check for Updates.
  4. Windows will find and download the available update.

Clear Temporary Files

Another reason on slow speed of the Internet is temporary files. You can clear them to increase the internet speed. To do so, follow the steps below:

  1. Go to the Start Menu.
  2. Find Disk Cleanup.
  3. Enter the Disk Cleanup.
  4. Choose C Drive.
  5. Choose all files.
  6. Select OK.
  7. Confirm it if it asked to confirm deleting the files to delete all temporary files.
  • Repeat the process to clear your system to increase internet speed.

Update Your Network Driver

A driver allows your system to operate software and hardware work together. A network driver connects to the internet, enabling hardware to work with your PC. Sometimes the network driver in Windows 10 is the reason for the low speed of the Internet. Follow the steps below to update it:

  1. Go to the Start Menu.
    1. Type Device Manager.
    2. On the Device Manager, click on the Network Adapters.

Restart Your System

To do so, right-click on the Start and click on Shut down or Sign out to restart your computer.

Reset Network Settings

  1. Hold Windows + I to open the Settings Menu.

  3. Choose Advanced Network Settings.
  4. Click on Network Reset.
  5. Reset Now.

Change Your Browser
