How to Change Your Sign-In Account Name on Windows 8?

Windows 8 has some advanced features to rename a Sign-in account. Sometimes it is necessary to change your sign-in account name to update it for security, or you may find a mistake in your name, which needs to be corrected. This article is going to tell you how to change your sign-in account name on Windows 8.

How to Change the Name of a Microsoft Account?

You can only change the name of your Microsoft Account with the Web; thus, go to the Microsoft Account settings on the Web. There is not any other way to change the name of the Microsoft Account on your system. In the case you are using a Local Account on your system, you can change it from User Account Setting. Follow the steps below to change the Microsoft Account Settings on the Web:

  1. Go to the Login Details at the Microsoft Account Settings on the Web.
  2. Select Sign-in.
  3. Select Edit name in the left side menu or select Edit Display Name under Account Summary.
  4. Change your name.

Note: It is possible to choose any combination you want, but you have to complete the first name and last name areas.

  • Hit Save after you change the displayed name.
  • You can see the changes in your Microsoft Account.

If you go to the Start Menu and you see that your display name has not changed yet, follow the steps below:

  1. Press Windows key + C to open the Charms Bar.
  2. Hit Settings.
  3. Select Change PC Settings.
  4. Select Users under PC Settings.
  5. You should temporarily switch to a Local Account to make your Windows recognize that you changed your display name.
  6. Restart your system.
  7. Switch back to your Microsoft Account.
  8. To get started, hit Switch to a Local Account.
  9. You should enter the password of the Microsoft Account.
  10. Hit Next.
  11. When Microsoft warn you what the switch mean, hit Next to continue.
  12. You can rename your Local Account, change the password and tweak the hint.
  13. Hit Next again.
  14. Whenever you go back to the Start Screen, you can see that you are using a Local Account now.
  15. Restart your system.
  16. After restarting, go back to the User Settings for Windows 8.
  17. Select Switch to a Microsoft Account.
  18. Input your Local Account password.
  19. Select Next.
  20. You can make a brand new Microsoft Account or you can use an existing one.
  21. Enter an e-mail address.
  22. Select Next.
  23. You will be promoted to enter the Microsoft Account password. Enter that.
  24. Hit Next.
  25. The confirmation will be given to you about the completion of the process.
  26. Hit Next.

Note: It will take some times to merge the Local Account to the Microsoft Account. After finishing, you can see the display name has changed immediately.

How to Confirm your New PC with your Microsoft Account

Microsoft will not trust your system.

  1. Select Update Info to start the process.
  2. A confirmation code will be sent to you with email or text message to trust the contact information with your Microsoft Account.
  3. Enter the code.
  4. Hit Next.
  5. Now everything will change properly.

How to Change Sign-in Account Name via Live.com?

It is possible to change the name by visiting Live.com. To use it, follow the steps below:

  1. Press Windows Key to bring up the screen.
  2. Hit the up arrow if you have enabled applications view in Windows 8.1
  3. On the upper right of the screen, right click on your user picture.
  4. Select Change Account Picture.
  5. At the Account screen that loads, select More Account Settings Online link to the right.
  6. Enter your email address and password at the website that loads and sign into your Microsoft account.
  7. Select Edit Display Name link in the account summary section.
  8. Enter the name that you would like it to appear.
  9. Hit Save.
  10. You should restart Windows and then you can see the chosen name.

How to Change the Name of a Microsoft Account in Windows 8.1?

Follow the steps below to change the name of a Microsoft Account:

  1. Sign-in to Windows 8.1 with the account that you like to modify.
  2. Hold Windows + C from the Home Screen to display Charms bar.
  3. Go to the Settings.
  4. Select Change PC Settings.
  5. Hit Accounts.
  6. Select Your Account.
  7. Select More Account Setting Online.
  8. Sign in with your Microsoft Account.
  9. Select Edit in the Display Name section.
  10. Change the Account Name.
  11. Hit Save.
  12. Close the browser.

How to Rename User Account in Windows 8

  1. On the right bottom, move to the cursor.
  2. Hit the search box.
  3. Type the name that you want.
  4. Type Control Panel in the Search Box and click on it.
  5. Select Add or Remove User Accounts under the User Account Family Safety.

How to Change Logon Name (User Account Name) via File Explorer?

  1. Run File Explorer.
  2. Right click on This PC icon in the navigation pane.
  3. Click Manage from its context menu.
  4. You can see the Computer Management window.
  5. Go to the Computer Management.
  6. Hit System Tools.
  7. Select Local Users and Groups.
  8. Hit Users.
  9. You can see the display name.
  10. Choose the username from the list in the right pane and right click on it
  11. Select Rename.
  12. You can edit the first column of the user. Thus, specify a new logon name.
  13. Hit Enter and close Computer Management.
